Beast of "Nian"

In Chinese mythology, a Nian is a beast that lives under the sea or in the mountains.

Festive family feast

A Chinese New Year meal consists of the basics: fish, meat (chicken and duck), and niangao.

Antithetical couplets

Couplets displayed as part of the Chinese New Year festival, on the first morning of the New Year, are called chunlian.
